Twilight Fic Recs [Jun. 27th, 2016|10:14 pm]

I know, I know. I hate Twilight with a burning passion. So it amazes me that I enjoy the fanfic as much as I do. Just about everything is post-canon, so I've divided up differently than I normally do: basically kittens and sunshine versus screaming horror.

Post-finale - optimistic:

Friday's Child by Lisse - A series of moments of Renesme growing up.
The absolute best possible future for Renesme, where she loves her vampire family, but has much more healthy ideas and attitudes. She's an incredibly human character and I love her to bits. Complete.

Season of the She-Wolf by Vivenne67 - When the hybrid Nahuel returns to Forks with terrible news, Leah's life undergoes yet another upheaval.
A Leah-centric fic, this fic uses the best aspects of the Twilight novels and discards the worst. It focuses on actual interesting characters like Jacob and Leah while gently nudging blank slates like Bella into the background (without being cruel about it, no less). And while imprinting is used as a vehicle for romance, the writer doesn't shy away from demonstrating how horrifically wrong it can go. Features some great world-building and a uproarously entertaining commentary from Leah's jaded perspective.

She hates me by HM Grayson - Nessie growing up, seven to seventeen.
Shows Nessie figuring out that intellectual intelligence doesn't equal emotional intelligence. Basically growing up and making a mess of things, but fixing them anyway.

Post-finale - pessimistic:

Moves in mysterious ways by Lisse - A beautiful, mysterious girl starts at the local high school and a boy is severely creeped out.
Set an undisclosed length of time after the end of Breaking Dawn. This investigates the idea there are always outliers in the gene pool, so theoretically there should be people that are immune to vampire charm. The anti-Twilight in a lot of ways, as it deconstructs Bella's behaviour and implies less-than-happy-endings for the characters after the finale. Complete.

Eighteen by Estora - Renesme ruminates on the implications of age and imprinting.
This is no longer available on the net, but if you can find a copy, it's like a kick to the stomach. Possibly the darkest Twilight fic I've ever read, and conversely the most empowering. Be warned, it has very disturbing themes, particulary its tackling of child grooming. Complete.

Be Careful What You Wish For by The Necroposter - If Breaking Dawn wasn't a Mary-Sue fantasy but had actual charater development and actions with consequences.
When I mentioned screaming horror, this is what I was talking about. Bella doesn't get away with anyhing - not turning, not giving birth to Renesme, and definitely not pissing off the Volturi. Oddly enough, one of her most sympathetic portrayals. Incomplete.

Post-finale - clever:

The Wise Man and the Fool by Dasmervin - If you thought Aro had given up just because he retreated, you're sorely mistaken.
Demonstrates the sheer intellectual badassery of Aro and why he managed to rule unchallenged for so long. Complete.

Alternate Universe:

Luminosity by Alicorn - If Bella had been a tad more analytical and logical about the whole vampire thing...
Could be considered a re-telling or a for-want-of-a-nail, depending on how you look at it. Very long and very dark in places.

Famous Last Words by Miz Turwaithiel - When Bella's transformation goes wrong, Jacob and Edward go looking for her together.
One of the rare quality Jacob/Edward slash fics I've been able to find. Complete.
